Descriptive Writing
ELEMENTS OF DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPHS
Today the students were introduced to descriptive paragraph elements. We focused on a descriptive paragraph being a "snapshot" of time rather than continuous moments (like a narrative). We also discussed the use of similes and metaphors as a tool to compare objects that share a common feature and enrich description. The students were given the following introductory note:

On the first day we examined five descriptive paragraphs and completed a "Senses Chart" where we recorded the senses described in each paragraph. Refer to the sheets below:

On the the next two days, we wrote and shared descriptive paragraphs in groups on pictures provided in class. We will work on a culminating activity where students will write a descriptive paragraph on one of the two pictures provided.
