Blast From the Past
Toys are vital tools that help foster the mental, physical, emotional and social development of boys and girls. Toys are basic instruments for the development of children’s fantasy, thoughts and creativity, and undoubtedly, they are a child's best friend throughout. Because of this, certain toys trigger powerful memories and feelings within long past the years that we use them.
Today I shared with the students three toys that bring back fond memories of my early childhood. Some of these memories are pleasing because of the fun I had playing with the toy, while others were pleasing due to the status I got from my peers because I owned that toy. The commercials made the toys seem so cool, and if you owned them, you were cool. The following clips review the toys I shared with the students. See if any of these toys trigger memories for you.

The following blog provides other people's (of a similar age to me) and their experiences with these and other toys of that time period: http://bit.ly/p1H2yn (Caution: Some of the language on the blog is inappropriate.)
The students are asked to complete the "Blast From Your Past" journal writing assignment as a follow up to this lesson.

Pecha Kucha (Speeches)
Learning to speak in front of an audience is an important life skill, and like any other skill can be improved with practice and repetition. As we discussed today, many of you will at the very least make a speech at your own wedding or that of a close friends. Others will select careers, such as a teacher, nurse or someone in public relations, where you present in front of peers on a regular basis. With this in mind our Speech Unit focuses on developing your a skills and hopefully helps you to increase your confidence in your own ability to be entertaining.
Pecha Kucha talks are image enhanced speeches in which thought provoking images support what is being said. While traditional Pecha Kucha talks usually are 20 slides of 20 seconds each, for our school talks we are adopting the format of 15x20 or 15 slides of 20 seconds each for a total speech length of 5:00 minutes. _
